In 1998 Simon Hurst was awarded one of four travelling scholarships from S.P.A.B.

This consisted of six months travelling the length of the UK and Ireland visiting many conservation projects actively underway on historic buildings, learning from both architects and specialist contractors about appropriate methods of repair and conservation.  Following this, three months were spent visiting and sometimes staying in major historic properties, studying their art and architecture.
